Cotton Australia has welcomed Sussan’s Earth Day 2026 campaign featuring Moree-based agronomist Sophie O’Neill, who shared her perspective on modern cotton production, responsible sourcing and the importance of continuous improvement across the industry.
With more than 12 years working in cotton agronomy, O’Neill highlighted the strong culture of collaboration between growers, researchers and agronomists, helping accelerate innovation and improve environmental outcomes.
“The industry is unique in its collaborative culture,” O’Neill said.
“When growers, researchers and industry organisations share knowledge across regions and disciplines, new technologies are adopted faster and sustainability outcomes improve across the entire supply chain.”
She also reinforced how Australian cotton growers continue to adapt to changing conditions through smarter irrigation practices, integrated pest management and advances in crop technology.
“Since the introduction of biotechnology cotton varieties and integrated pest management practices, insecticide use for major pests has been reduced by around 97%. We are now able to rely on an integrated pest management approach and use beneficial insects to target pest populations,” she said.

Campaigns such as Sussan’s Earth Day feature play an important role in helping consumers better understand the story behind Australian-grown cotton and the people who produce it.
As consumers increasingly seek transparency around how clothing is made, storytelling and brand partnerships are becoming increasingly important in connecting customers with the origin of their natural fibres.
Cotton Australia continues to work with brands and retailers to help share authentic stories from paddock to product. By highlighting growers, agronomists and researchers, brands can help build greater awareness of the ongoing work taking place across the cotton industry to produce a premium natural fibre more responsibly.
