Two years after launching its traceability solution, the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) reports that over 50% of BCI Cotton entering global fashion and textile supply chains is now physically traceable, deriving from 15 countries.

Since the November 2023 rollout of BCI Traceability, more than 60 retailers and brands have signed up to source traceable BCI Cotton, known as Physical BCI Cotton, with 17 companies already receiving products. In total, over 23,000 metric tonnes of Physical BCI Cotton have been traced from cotton gins to retailers and brands - enough to produce more than 127 million standard cotton t-shirts.

Traceability has become essential for fashion supply chains due to their complexity and increasing regulatory requirements. BCI’s Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard ensures that Physical BCI Cotton is handled with integrity, and the traceability system is now available in all countries with BCI field-level programs.

For Australia, the rollout of Physical BCI Cotton is a significant milestone. Australian BCI cotton is benchmarked against the myBMP (Best Management Practices) sustainability standard, ensuring it meets high environmental, social, and economic sustainability criteria. This means Australian cotton growers can deliver traceable, responsibly produced cotton that aligns with both global BCI standards and local sustainability benchmarks.
