A new report highlights growing concerns about plastic microfibres from synthetic textiles like polyester, which are now found in every environment and even in human bodies. Unlike natural fibres, plastic microfibres persist, accumulate, and contain chemicals with largely unknown health effects. Emerging research links them to serious health risks, including cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders.
The report also questions how regulatory frameworks like the EU’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) classify all microfibres the same way, despite clear differences between synthetic and natural fibres like cotton.
