The Australian cotton industry’s commitment to sustainability and innovation was front and centre at the Cotton Sustainability Roundtable held on 3 December in Coogee. The event brought together cotton researchers, farmers, retailers, and finance experts to discuss how ongoing research and development can improve cotton production and environmental outcomes.
The agenda covered critical topics including global sustainability targets, consumer preferences for natural fibres, and emerging technologies to reduce emissions and enhance biodiversity. Presentations from leading academics and industry specialists highlighted practical solutions, such as advanced fertiliser technologies and digital agriculture tools, that are helping growers produce more cotton with fewer inputs while protecting soil health and ecosystems.
Ashley Hollis, Brand Relationship Manager from Cotton Australia said the event reinforced the importance of collaboration across the supply chain “The day was incredibly insightful. It was fantastic to hear firsthand from the industry’s researchers and farmers, the people truly at the forefront of innovation and impact.”
Speakers also addressed the growing influence of global trade policies and sustainability reporting on cotton markets, as well as opportunities in nature repair and carbon management. Farmers shared their experiences in adopting new practices, while retailer leaders outlined how sustainability and traceability are shaping future investment by the fashion and textile industry.
The roundtable closed with a clear message: Australian cotton is leading the way in sustainability through science, technology, and partnerships. Progress remains the industry’s priority, ensuring cotton stays profitable, environmentally responsible, and globally competitive.
