Cotton Australia is proud to launch the first instalment of its new series ‘Australian Cotton Stories’, highlighting the people, places and innovations behind the fibre that Australians love to wear.
To celebrate Biodiversity Month, the series kicks off with a short film featuring industry experts Stacey Vogel - Innovation Broker at the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) and Ethan Towns - Entomologist, owner of Outback Bugs and Narrabri Shire Councillor, giving insights into why biodiversity is so important to our growers and the natural environment in their care.
The video visits key sites where vital work is being done to expand our understanding and ensure the future of these precious ecosystems. The University of Sydney's 5000 acre Narrabri campus features - where animal and insect life is being monitored and mapped, alongside Wormtech - where thousands of tiny workers are helping to divert hundreds of thousands of tonnes of organic waste from landfill. We also see the restoration of riparian zones, along with some of the many insects and animals that rely on the health of these natural habitats across cotton growing regions.
Biodiversity is one of the many facets of the Australian cotton industry's sustainability program ‘myBMP’ - first introduced in 1997. MyBMP supports cotton growers in implementing natural pest management strategies, maximising water use efficiency, improving soil health, and protecting and retaining native animals and vegetation. A comprehensive review of the program is currently underway to ensure standards remain aligned with global best practice in a rapidly changing market.
