Australian Cotton Stories: More Than a Crop - It’s a Community.

Behind every bale of Australian cotton lies a story of people, place and connection – the latest episode of Australian Cotton Stories visits some of the regional communities our growers call home.

Cotton is grown in over 250 regional areas across Australia, and with around 90% of farms family-owned, these are often businesses that have been deeply involved in their local communities for generations.

These farms don’t just produce fibre – they support local schools, small businesses, clubs, and community groups. Many growers are actively involved: in the 2023 CRDC Grower Survey, 94% reported participating in at least one community based activity, from sponsorships and charity events to volunteering.

The industry also supports local jobs, with the average cotton farm directly employing around six people, and the bulk of their expenses - approximately 82% - spent in local or neighbouring towns.

Cotton Grower Associations (CGAs) play a vital role too. Through initiatives like the Cotton Community Support Program, CGAs contribute to a wide range of local projects – from school events and community infrastructure to mental health services.

When obstacles arise, the networks built around cotton help regional towns stay connected, resilient, and ready to face future challenges. Cotton Australia is proud to both highlight and be a part of these vibrant communities.

Future installments of Australian Cotton Stories will explore themes including sustainability, data, farming families, and more. Follow us on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube so you don’t miss an episode.
